蜈蚣屬唇足綱共分成四目: 地蜈蚣目Geophilomorpha、石蜈蚣目Lithobiomorpha、蜈蚣目 Scolopendrida、蚰蜒目Scutigerida其中除了俗稱家蜈蚣的蚰蜒擁有十五對非常細長的腳最易辨識外，其餘三目外形相似，應先由其擁有幾對足來作初步的區分，地蜈蚣目31~181對，石蜈蚣目15 對，蜈蚣目21~23對。
Centipedes belong to Chilopoda that are divided into 4 orders: Geophilomorpha, Lithobiomorpha, Scolopendrida and Scutigerida. Scutigerida, commonly called house centipedes, have 15 pairs of very slender legs, so they are the most distinguishable. The other 3 orders look alike, which should be initially differentiated by the number of their legs: 31-181 pairs for Geophilomorpha, 15 pairs for Lithobiomorpha and 21-23 pairs for Scolopendrida.
